We would like to thank Yulius Effendi from Surakarta, Central Java, for his letter ""Losing CDs inside posted parcel"", (The Jakarta Post, July 21).
In connection with his complaint, we need to clarify as follows:
First, all postal parcels from abroad entering the local post office are subjected to inspection by customs and excise personnel, and state postal company PT Pos Indonesia acts as witness without the right to open and examine such packages.
Second, when the parcel arrived at Solo Post Office, it weighed 1.24 kg on the scales with its wrapping still intact, while the validation column in its CP-72 form indicated 1,243 grams, meaning no weight change.
Third, the parcel was then delivered to the customs and excise office to be opened and examined, and a postal parcel specification and levying form (PPKP) was prepared, detailing the kind, quantity, condition and gross weight of goods.
Fourth, after the customs examination, the parcel was returned to the Solo Post Office's postal parcel division. The recipient was required to check the parcel and its weight at the post office. The check had already done before postal officers.
Fifth, data verification showed that the CP-72 form mentioned 1,243 grams as computerized, so that if there was a loss of 30 CDs as claimed (weighing 16.20 grams each), the CP-72 weight should have been 1,729 grams instead of 1,243 grams.
The CP-72 weight was filled in by the originating country (Singapore) while the destination country made the PPKP according to the state of the goods.
Sixth, when collecting the parcel, the recipient already signed column IV of the PPKP as an acknowledgement of reexamination before postal officers.
We apologize for any inconvenience that may have resulted from our service.
