JAKARTA: The University of Indonesia's School of Medicine inaugurated Menaldi Rasmin, Mohamad Sadikin and Amir Syarif as professors here Saturday.

In an address marking his promotion to professorship, Amir said Indonesia has 25,000 to 30,000 species of plants, or 75 percent of earth's plant species.

Out of 9,600 newfound species, only 380 are being utilized while the rest still require scientific research, he said.

His speech was titled "Toxicology and its Role in the Development and the Application of Natural Ingredients in Indonesia".

He said toxicology has a significant role in making sure that alternative medicines are being applied safely.

Sadikin gave a speech titled "Nature Becomes the Teacher: Genetic Control over Oxidative Threats".

He explained how oxygen can generate a lot of energy, but can also be quite reactive because of its semi-radical nature, which is why oxygen must be genetically controlled.

Menaldi spoke about the development of pulmonology, the science of the lungs, in Indonesia from the 1930s until the present. -- JP
