Leaving home and seeking employment in the capital is tough. For me, however, it is much harder to find a rumah kost, or boarding house.
It's like finding your groom-to-be, who, according to Javanese belief, has to meet three requirements: comes from a good family, has a good attitude and is either smart or has financial security, although both are preferable.
During my search for a place to stay in Jakarta, I also had to take other things into consideration, including the house owner's background, other tenants' attitude, offered facilities and, of course, the price of the room.
Since this is Jakarta we are talking about, being close to your place of work is obviously the number-one requirement.
Furthermore, I also wanted my boarding house to be presentable enough to show to my friends and relatives and comfortable enough to imbue me with security and warmth. Now do you see the similarities between a boarding house and a spouse?
Like I said, it's not easy to find.
Once I got accepted to work for a major electronics company in the capital, I immediately contacted some friends who were living there and asked them to find me a boarding house.
I set the rules and I went through the details: no fussy owner, no curfew, female-only tenants, fully furnished plus an air conditioner, housemaid, laundry service included, an en-suit bathroom, located close to work and cheap.
Such a boarding room, according to my friends, would cost Rp 2 million (US$210) per month, while my budget was between Rp 700,000 and Rp 1 million.
"Oh come on, be sensible! Look, if it were in Bekasi (Jakarta's satellite town), I bet you'd find lots that fit the bill, but this is Sudirman (close to the central business district) we're talking about," my friend said.
Was I being insensible, or maybe just optimistic? Immediately upon arrival in Jakarta, I went to the areas known as boarding house hubs in Central Jakarta, including Karet and Bendungan Hilir. I literally went door to door, examining the rooms' conditions, and comparing one with another. I spent hours going around, and the results were the same. None were good and cheap, only good and expensive or poor and cheap.
There was one for only Rp 500,000 per month, but the 2-by-3 meters room had no air-con nor even a window. Sue me for being picky.
I was left with two choices: lower my standards or stay somewhere other than a boarding house. The second option was impossible since the next morning would be my first day working and I had nowhere to put my luggage or take a bath.
I had no other option but to lower my standards, and there ended my search for my "soulmate". In Bendungan Hilir, for a Rp 1.1 million room, 3-by-3 meters, air-con, a bed, a table, a closet, laundry, housemaid, and only a 15 minute commute to work, including a walk and a trip on the Kopaja 19, a public bus.
A good enough "soulmate", though I have to admit it was quite expensive. At least I wouldn't have to spend too much time on Jakarta's roads, leaving me with enough free time to find my human soulmate.
Now we've finally arrived at the last stage of this 'new relationship' thing: Getting your parent's blessing. As I had expected, my parents did not instantly approve of my choice.
"Daisy dear, I think the room is too small, what if one of your cousins wanted to stay over?" my mother said.
"I don't like your housemates honey, they smoke too much, it won't be good for you," my father said.
And then came the magic words: "We think you can do much better than this."
As if I were defending a less-than-favorite boyfriend, I replied: "I appreciate your opinion, but please try to understand that I am an adult now and, at the moment I have chosen this because it is the best I can find. I want to be independent and stick to my choice."
And my parents just rolled their eyes, as if saying, "OK dear, don't say that we didn't warn you."
So here I am, trying to stay committed to my choice, at least for now, and trying to make the best out of what I have, no matter how often I complain about my "soulmate", no matter how many "I TOLD YOU SO"s I hear. Wish me luck.

Have you tried in behind Planet Hollywood on Jalan Karet Kuningan (or otherwise known as jl guru mughni) lots of kost'an around there.
We stayed at a kost'an called Kuningan 21, and paid 2.4 million a month, (cheaper and more expensive rooms avail) but that had AC, fridge, own bathroom, cleaning service once a week and washing everyday. Undercover basement for parking cars or motorbikes and 24 hours securites. Each room has own telephone extension. The room size was about 7m x 5m with double spring bed. Sheets are changed once a week, suplied by the kost'an. (of course you can bring your own) there is free aqua also on each floor, and a share kitchen on each floor. (3 storey building) rooms on 3rd floor are cheaper.
Unmarried couples were allowed to share the same room (giggle giggle) The owners are chinese.

As a foreigner who has lived in Indonesia and in Jakarta, I must say that's what happens in a city too big and too crowded. In fact, it's almost the same problem when you try to find a boarding house in another big city.
Consider also that the concept of boarding house or 'kost' is totally non-existent in many countries, like Italy...
I lived briefly near Menteng in 2004 and a 3x3 room with AC, bathroom, springbed and small wardrobe/cupboard and maid service in a recently refurbished kost in Halimun costed me about 1,5 million Rupiah a month.
Yes, maybe that price was also influenced of my 'foreigner' status, but the neighbourhood was quiet, even if sometimes strange characters roamed around there (Halimun is practically sandwiched between Kuningan/Menteng and no man's land), the boarding house clean and safe. I had to get a very short ojek ride to office.
So again, I think that's the problem that comes with big cities.
Hope that MTR will have even better effect than Transjakarta Busway...

Hi Daisy,
I just read your article. It does not happen only in Jakarta. Try to find a sensible boarding house here in Banda Aceh. Mine is also 3-by-3, with Air Con, a spring bed, no table, no closet, no laundry, no housemaid, bathroom outside the room, difficult access to food, although quite near from my office I still need to take "becak" (which costs me Rp 10,000 for one ride) otherwise I will get tanned in this heat. And the room costs me Rp 1 million per month! Outrageous!

Yes, i agree. Find the cheap and comfortable one in Jakarta is very hard.
There's only two option for find the best 'kost' in Jakarta according to my opinion :
1. Lower your standard, or
2. Raise your budget
I choose the no.1, to lower my standard by cutting the budget for air-con. Now i lived in Karet with the amount Rp 540.000 that's include the First Media Channel, servant, laundry, etc.
If there's a large room with air con, internet, maid servant, laundry, etc with only Rp 300.000 i would be gladly to move (it never happen maaan!)

Hi Daisy,
I also have the same problem. Already got a somewhat nice place (Rp 1 million/month, 3x4 m, AC, en-suite bathroom but no laundry) here near my workplace in Menteng. But still, I'm human, so I still want to find another. A better one with an owner which is not so strict (teehee...)
Apparently, that's not an easy task. At all. Most of the nice (read:according to my criteria) kost are way too expensive, around Rp 1.5 to 2.5 million/month.
I think your place (esp. if the washing thing is included in the monthly payment) is already okay. But I wish you, me and all kost-seekers here the best of luck :)

Haha Now, I can see the similarity between finding a spouse and a boarding house. What you had experience it’s what you call life.
In life sometimes you might not get what you really want, there are always barriers or confusion that you might experience. But this is something that i always have in my mind, "Always try the best you can in everything that you are doing now", because with trying all the best that you can, you will someday achieve what you want. And you will never regret your decision, because it’s what you did the best. People intend to lose their concentration with unnecessary problems. Never lose faith.
Never turn back, and face the problem. Don’t be afraid, and always move forward, by moving forward you will create more option in your life.
When the time comes, you will find your "boarding house" or maybe your "prince charming” : )
And when the day comes, everything will seem to be wonderful, and you will appreciate everything.
Keep your positive mind set, you will be success someday, because you are in the correct path: )
