Dreaming of an Education

In an ideal world, everybody would get the education they need and want. Unfortunately, it’s not an ideal world, especially here in Indonesia. For many students and their families, a take it-or-leave it-situation prevails, literally. The number of students forced to drop out due to lack of funds runs in the millions.
For others, like the subjects of our cover story this month, they do what is expected of them – go to school, study, get a degree – but it is still not enough to prepare them for what lies ahead. It’s no surprise then that some students and their parents wonder if getting an education can really make a difference.
Well, it should and it can. Read this month about a school for the children of trash-pickers, a place that is clean and welcoming only a few meters from their parents’ crammed work area. We also have an article on ways that we can sponsor students from low-income families to pursue their dreams.
Let’s all lend a hand, so they can get a footing in the world.
