Students block road on fuel prices hike plan

Hundreds of students on Monday blocked the main coast road in Cirebon, West Java, opposing the
government's plan to raise fuel prices next month.

The two-hour blockage caused heavy traffic congestion and forced authorities to divert cars to other roads.

The protesters said the government had failed to develop an alternative energy source despite the country's vast potential for wind energy, geothermal energy and biofuel.

"At the moment, we continue to rely on oil," Hendra, coordinator of the demonstration, said.

"The government may give poor people Rp 100,000 (US$11) aid a month, but the amount is too small to cope with the increasing price of basic commodities," he added. (***)
