JAKARTA: Writer Djenar Maesa Ayu, who recently produced and directed her first film, Mereka Bilang Saya Monyet (They Say I'm a Monkey), is now completing her new novel Ranjang (Bed) with a plot that may remind people of a video tape scandal from 2007.
"I hope I can finish the novel later this year. I don't know whether Gramedia still wants to publish it," the 35-year-old writer told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
Known for exploring women's sexuality in her works of literature, the mother of two daughters said Ranjang would be the second novel after her first novel, Nayla, which was written in 2005.
Djenar, who is the daughter of noted director the late Sjuman Djaya and senior actress Tutie Kirana, is also the author of three books (collections of her short stories): Mereka Bilang Saya Monyet (2002), Jangan Main-main dengan Kelaminmu (Don't Play with Your Genitals) (2004) and Cerita Pendek tentang Cerita Cinta Pendek (Short Story on a Short Love Story) (2006).
According to her blog www.djenar.com, Ranjang is a story about a member of the House of Representatives who was involved in a love affair. The plot may remind people of a certain politician from Golkar Party who was caught on video naked with a dangdut singer last year.--JP/A. Junaidi.
