While many people suffer from poverty, there are those who take advantage of the situation. Punish them strictly. Kudos to the police for arresting smugglers and hoarders. To all Indonesians: help the government solve this problem, don't just blame them. BIMO K.P.

On fuel price hikes
Why does the government always make the increase in the price of fuels so drastic, and why do they announce it well ahead of the planned hike? They could have increased the price by Rp 500 a liter early last year, then made another increase of Rp 500 in the middle of the year, then another Rp 500 at the beginning of 2008 and another Rp 500 in July 2008.
As things stand now, people are getting restless, prices of staple foods and other vital goods have escalated, making them unaffordable for the poor. If this is followed by an announcement of an increase in the salaries of civil servants, then it is like a death sentence for the poor. Will the BLT help, I wonder? ROSIANA BUDIMAN
