This is not a message from your doctor, but your stylist.

Marc Jacobs opened his spring and summer show with a shapely model in a nurse’s outfit. No doubt, many men would choose to admit themselves to the hospital if their caregivers were as alluring as the one in the Jacobs show for LV (like that popular TV commercial where the plodding resident of an old people’s home springs back to life thanks to his young and pretty nurse).

Jacobs offers practical clothes to greet the summer, including the baking heat to be found here in Jakarta. In my opinion, his creations are not just about the design, but also contain an important message: Don’t let your appearance make you ill.

For instance, a friend of mine recently attended a wedding bound tightly in a corset. Loathe to do the hard work at the gym or stay away from the cookie jar, it’s easier to put yourself through the pain of hardly being able to breathe.

I also ran into three socialites walking a tad awkwardly in their towering brand-name high heels. Didn’t they feel like those Chinese ladies of yore with their feet bound and broken for their men’s pleasure?

They all answered in unison that, yes, their feet were killing them, but appearances are everything. That’s not to mention the oversize fashionable bags that women tote around town, only to have to hobble to the chiropractor’s to get themselves back in order.

The diagnosis is clear, then: Don’t make yourself sick simply to be in fashion. + Samuel Mulia
