Letter: Indonesian complexity

I find it comical that the critics of my letter (The Jakarta Post, May 7) are attacking Switzerland when they are missing the point entirely: that sometimes an empire is too big to be governed successfully and will eventually disintegrate, no matter how well governed. Consider the Mongol, Ottoman, Roman, Persian and British empires.

History is full of them. Of course the Dutch had an empire and created Indonesia by overpowering islanders with modern weaponry. When the Javanese defeated the Dutch after WWII, they inherited an artificial construct: Indonesia. There was no Javanese hegemony over those islands previously.

With such a large population dispersed over 13,000 islands, of course not everybody will enjoy the "benefits" of rule by the Javanese.

For instance, why are the security forces in Papua Javanese? Why are the police chiefs in Bali, etc., Javanese? Why can't the police chief in Bali be Balinese? Why was there so much transmigration of Javanese to other islands like Papua, Sumatra, Kalimantan, etc? Why do the resources of, say Kalimantan get sold and the taxes and royalties then get sent to Jakarta to subsidize the fuel for people who drive luxury cars in Jakarta? Why can't the people of Kalimantan, the indigenous people, enjoy a higher standard of living from the wealth of their resources?

And then the wealth sent to Jakarta is squandered on efforts to impose central rule on the disparate parts of the 13,000+ islands (i.e. a very large army in a country which needs a navy or coast guard).

The best thing that happened to Singapore was when it was separated from Malaya. It avoided the religious-ethnic problems from which Malaysia now suffers. And then Singapore became the new home for wealthy Indonesians to park the fruits of their corruption (a loss to Switzerland!).

There was no Javanese hegemony over those islands previously.

--> It is such a pity that Tettamanti did not dig deeper. He forgot the Majapahit empire (1293-1500) which ruled most of the Nusantara archipelago just like Indonesia now.

While not all Indonesians love the Majapahit, it was the first effort to unite the archipelago. Just like what the Romans did in Europe and beyond.

When the Javanese defeated the Dutch after WWII...

--> Is it another ignorance? The whole archipelago was revolting against the Dutch, not only the Javanese. There were some collaborateurs, of course, here. And there are people who prefer to be inlanders forever and loyal subjects to the van Oranje family. Just like those RMS separatists.

It is also interesting to see how Tettamanti advocates the breakaway of Indonesia, perhaps so that white, caucasian Nekolim from Europe or elsewhere, can take control of Indonesia's natural resources. Look at East Timor which has fallen victim of Australia's greed on oil reserve at the Timor Gap.

On the other hand, most European countries now long for another Pax Romana in the form of EU. Everybody wants to join EU if not for Russia threatening its former satellite countries.

Alas, the Swiss have decided to remain "neutral" so they don't have to follow EU conventions on transparancy therefore keep serving the world's crooks and corrupt leaders.

So, as long as the Europeans keep enlarging EU, leave Indonesia alone for we have plenty of jobs to keep the country intact.

Mr. Tettamanti is right about replacing dutch hegemony by Javanese. The fact is that the higher ranks in government all over Indonesia are Javanese origine.

I can see your point. Although i dont agree with it completely.
I think i remember reading it on the paper too. i remember that the writing was short and it didnt give you much room to elaborate your idea fully. and i can see some people can quickly reacted that way because they feel offended. because in a way, it did sounds like you were just naively saying "hey, why dont you guys separate?! trust me, it will make things better.."

but anyway, i want to comment on Ferri's comment on your writing.(the first comment on this page) that is the dumbest comment i have ever read. And these kind of people are actually one of the reasons why we, indonesians, are slow growing.hopefully, better education in the future will eliminate these type of people from our country. or maybe we should let them stay, since our motto is unity in diversity.

speaking of that motto, Bhineka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity) I believe that it is possible for a big colorful nation to be a developed and progressive and modern country.

our problem is not about the diversity, but in its management. any country that has gone through over 30 years of oppression, no matter how small and simple they are, can be as backwards as indonesia.
the corruption is what is setting us back.

about separating,
lets say i have a huge yard. but if i dont do anything with it, it will make me lose money for maintenance cost. but if i do something with it, it can bring me much profit.
Selling the land piece by piece to my neighbor is not the solution.

losing money in the maintenance cost lead to poverty. poverty leads to many other things, bad education (like Feri for example), and many others... no need to elaborate.

we need an honest, firm, progressive and open minded government and they will lead the people to be honest, firm, progressive and open minded as well.

big and colorful is never the issue. it is actually our assets. wait til one day we have a smart enough government that will lead to smarter indonesia and I will invite you to visit us here to prove my point.
I doubt that we will still be young at that point. but it will come.

MERDEKA!

Thanks for your comments on my country. But, I don't think they are politically correct, since we, Indonesians, never comment on your country. You don't know how we think, so how could you comment on us? Are you part of us? Please mind your own.

Thanks.
