Amid soaring education expenses at all levels, Diponegoro University (Undip) took an unusual step to reduce its tuition fee by about 10 to 25 percent starting from the 2009 academic year.
"A good education is expensive. However, a bad education could be more expensive," said Undip rector Susilo Wibowo, as quoted by Antara news agency, on Tuesday.
To calculate the reduction, the university will take this year's inflation into consideration, said Susilo.
Susilo said the university policy to reduce its tuition fee was part of its commitment to provide quality education for all people.
Currently, Undip charges its students a Rp 900,000 (about US$97) tuition fee per semester, a Rp 2.5 million so-called contribution for institutional development, which is paid once, a practical works and support activities fee ranging from Rp 125,000 to Rp 500,000 per semester, and a so-called development of educational management contribution.(**)
