East Java continued its gold spree Tuesday to top the medal tally at the National Games (PON) here, while Jakarta began to close the gap.
As of 9 p.m. local time -- Samarinda is one hour ahead of Jakarta -- East Java had collected 22 gold medals followed by Jakarta with 18. East Kalimantan sits in third with 14 gold medals.
East Java remained dominant in the pool, taking both golds on offer in diving, thanks to Della Sinasari and Herlyani Dias Sukmahati in the women's synchronized 5 meters, and M. Nasrullah
and Husaini Noor in the men's synchronized 10 meters.
National archer Rina Dewi Puspita Sari of East Java was too strong in the women's 70 meters, while National Games teammate Ika Yulian Rochmawati won gold in the women's 60 meters.
In track and field, East Java added a gold medal on a day when South Sumatra's Ni Putu Desi Margawati set a new Games record in the women's pole vault for one of two gold medals won by her contingent.
The East Java gymnastics team took another gold on Tuesday after winning two the previous day.
Jakarta also won a gymnastics gold on Tuesday, with Endriadi, a member of the national training camp, scoring an 80.075 to win the men's artistic individual all-round ahead of Agus Adi Prayoko of East Java and Muhammad Tri Saputra of Riau.
Despite the victory, Jakarta team manager Gianti Imasyah said Endriadi was still not in top form.
"He could have performed better. He needs to work harder in the next event if he wants to win more medals," Gianti told The Jakarta Post.
Jakarta made a strong move up the medal table Tuesday, helped by the convincing performance by its roller skaters who took all three gold medals on offer in a competition that was halted by rain.
Mirko Andrasi, Regie Yumasuti and Faisal Norman won the men's 10,000 meter relay while Hermina Salfitri and Faisal Norman triumphed in the women's 1,000 meter sprint and men's 1,000 meter sprint, respectively.
The judo competition gave Jakarta two more gold medals through Cliffia Sulistyo in the women's 70-kilogram division and Jimmy Anggoro in the men's 81 kilograms.
After four days of the competition, which features 33 provinces competing in a total of 43 sports, Gorontalo, North Maluku, West Nusa Tenggara, Riau Islands, Southeast Sulawesi and West Sulawesi have yet to win a medal. (**)
