The Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) is holding its 34th annual gathering and its 7th General Conference and Associated Meetings in Nusa Dua, Bali, from July
21 to 24, 2008.
The AIBD meeting will be officially opened by Indonesian Communication and Information Minister Muhammad Nuh on Monday evening, said Henry Subiakto, an expert staff member to the minister, Monday morning.
Some 100 delegates from 26 countries are attending the meeting. Twenty new members, consisting of broadcasting institutions from several countries, have also been invited to the meeting.
Established on Aug. 12, 1997, AIBD is a regional inter-governmental organization servicing countries of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in the field of electronic media development.
The Kuala Lumpur-based organization has also received assistance from UNESCO, UNDP (United Nations Development Program), and ABU (Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union).
Indonesian state-owned radio station RRI and television station TVRI have benefited much from the presence of AIBD. At least 1,000 personnel of RRI and TVRI had joined training workshops and seminars organized by AIBD, Subiakto said.
Indonesia was appointed a member of the AIBD Executive Board in the 33rd Annual Gathering of AIBD General Conference in Maldives last year.
As part of the AIBD meeting activities in Bali, professional discussions on "Media and Poverty" and "Media and Climate Change" will be held on Wednesday.
Representatives of 50 Indonesian electronic and print media are invited to join the discussions.(**)
