Regional airline Kal Star will soon serve a route linking South Kalimantan provincial capital Banjarmasin with Kotabaru, head of Kotabaru's Gusti Syamsiar Alam regional airport, Tugino, said Tuesday.

"I have asked the airline to submit official letter stating its ability to serve the Banjarmasin route for an afternoon flight," he said.

Kal Star, operating a twin turboprop ATR-42 with a capacity of 42 passengers, will start serving the new route in August.

Previously the route was served by Riau Airlines using a 48- seat twin turboprop Fokker F-50. The airlines, however, halted the service indeterminately with a daily flight.

Tugino expected Riau Airlines to resume operations soon to give Kotabaru residents more choices as well as better services and cheaper fares.

"I have also asked Kal Star to open a route linking Kotabaru with Surabaya to allow residents to travel to Java," he said. (****)
