Four people arrested for railway track theft

Police have arrested four people sawing a railway track near Purwakarta railway station in West Java on Wednesday morning.

Antara news agency reported that the four were caught red-handed by locals when they were trying to cut a substitute railway track at Gang Turi, Purwakarta district, Purwakarta
regency.

One of the suspects, Iyong, 44, was taken to Purwakarta's Bayu Asih Hospital for a leg injury after being beaten up by the mob when trying to escape.

The other suspects, Encu, 54, Bambang, 29, and Wawan are all from Karang Anyar, Purwakarta.

The suspects are now detained at the Purwakarta district police headquarter. Purwakarta Police head Adj. Comr. Solihin Bahrudin was not immediately available for confirmation.

Police also seized a saw, a bag and three pieces of 2-meter long railway tracks as evidence.

Purwakarta railway station head Agus Barkah said railway track theft frequently happened in Purwakarta, adding the thefts had become more recent over the last three months, with no single suspect arrested.

"It is frequent, but only this time were the suspects caught," Barkah said. (**)
