Temporary regents tasked with heading newly established regencies cannot run for elections once they finish their duties preparing the regulations and offices for the regions, Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto said Wednesday.

"These caretakers are appointed not to prepare them as definitive regents, but to prepare the administration in the new regions," he said.

"Currently there are 471 regencies and mayoralties nationwide and there will be 12 more."

Mardiyanto was speaking at a meeting of the association of municipalities in Surakarta, Central Java.

Once a new region is established, the central government will appoint a caretaker whose duties include preparing a direct election to have definitive regional head.

Some caretakers, however, have decided to join the election taking advantage of their position. (****)
