The North Jakarta Police, in cooperation with PT Aetra Air Jakarta, have arrested a suspect for illegally installing water pipes at various locations in Tanah Merah, North Jakarta, a press release said Wednesday.

The suspect, GM, allegedly supplied water to 30 houses in the area.

The police arrested the suspect on Tuesday, detaining him at a North Jakarta facility and confiscating 30-meter pipes as evidence.

Aetra has punished three mechanics in its employ, said to be involved in the illegal installment, the release said.

"If Aetra and the police hadn't acted quickly, we would have lost at least 900 cubic meters of water a month," said Devy A. Yheanne, Aetra's public relations manager.

The suspect, who rigged pipes to an Aetra customer's water tank, was the landlord for the 30 houses receiving the illegal tap water.

GM was caught one week ago connecting the pipes by an Aetra Audit Team in the area for a routine inspection.

The North Jakarta Police are currently investigating the incident.

GM could be charged according to the criminal code on theft and vandalism.

The effort to stop illegal water installment and consumption is part of a campaign begun by Aetra in 2007 to wipe out water theft. --JP
