MEDAN, North Sumatra: Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said that the government would allocate Rp 1 trillion (US$109 million) to provide scholarships to doctors who wish to take specialist degrees.

"The government will finance the program from the state budget allocated for the Ministry of National Education next year," she told reporters on the sidelines of a visit here on Saturday.

The government will give priority to doctors who are assigned in remote areas, Siti said.

"They can register themselves and we will select the eligible candidates for the program," she said.

She added the country was in urgent need of surgeons, gynecologists, pediatricians and internists. -- JP
