JAKARTA: Sumita Tobing, the former president director of public broadcaster TVRI, will continue standing trial for alleged corruption after the Central Jakarta District Court on Thursday rejected her defense plea.
State prosecutors charged Sumita with embezzling some Rp 5.2 billion in state money in the procurement of television camera equipment and spare parts during her tenure as TVRI head in 2001.
She faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted.
Presiding judge Panusunan Harahap said the panel of judges dismissed Sumita's plea, which she has to prove during the course of the trial.
Sumita, who was also general manager of SCTV and a director of Metro TV, was arrested on May 25, 2008.
The court will resume hearing the case on September 9, when prosecution witnesses take to the stand. -- JP
