Suhaiyah, a resident of the predominantly Muslim village of Kepaon in South Denpasar, Bali, prepares servings of homemade brongko, which she sells for Rp 1,000 per portion. The traditional beverage is usually served only during the Ramadan fasting month as one of the village’s favorite fast-breaking drinks. Brewed from a mixture of cinnamon, coconut milk, tapioca starch, sugar and shredded jackfruit, the reddish liquid can also be found at the village’s Al Muhajirin Mosque where it is served for free for the joint break of the fast at dusk.
