JAKARTA: The city police auto theft squad in cooperation with Batam Police nabbed a man who allegedly had been stealing cars from leasing agencies in the city.

The man, Djong Ju Kwan, 33, a.k.a Aken, was arrested while selling one of the stolen vehicles in Batam, Riau, last month.

Police said Aken had bought cars from several leasing companies in Jakarta. He paid the down payment and drove the cars away, but then failed to pay the installments. He also created fake ownership documents.

"So far we know he sold 12 stolen cars in East Nusa Tenggara; Batam, Riau; and Purwakarta, West Java," Comr. M. Irianto said Tuesday.

In a separate investigation, police arrested three fences involved in reselling stolen cars working with a ringleader in Karawang, West Java. Police confiscated 19 stolen cars as well as their forged documents.

"They may face up to four years in prison," Irianto said, adding the thievery had been going on for a year. -- JP
