Tangerang Police shot dead one of two long-wanted members of a motorcycle theft gang as he attempted to escape arrest in the Pondok Aren district in Tangerang regency on Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, officers arrested another two of the gang's members who were identified as Keken and Jaya (alias Wanda), Tangerang Police detective chief Comr. Dewa Wijaya said Thursday. Two other members, Ujang and Ajo, remain at large.

"The suspects led officers to the hideout of Ujang and Ajo, but Wanda made an attempt to escape and ignored two warning shots," Dewa said, adding that the suspect had died on the way to hospital.

Keken admitted that his gang had stolen dozens of motorcycles from motorists on the streets of Ciputat, Pamulang, Pondok Aren, Serpong and Lebak Bulus, all in South Jakarta, Dewa said.

"The gang would force passing motorists to stop in quiet areas by pointing a gun at them, and then they would take their motorcycles," he said.
