Bike theft gang member shot dead

TANGERANG: Police shot dead a member of a motorcycle theft syndicate Wednesday after the man resisted arrest in Pondok Aren district, Tangerang regency
Tangerang police detective chief Comr. Dewa Wijaya said Thursday officers arrested two gang members, identified as Keken and Jaya (alias Wanda), on Wednesday afternoon. Two other members remain at large.
"The suspects led officers to the hideouts of their accomplices but Wanda tried to run away and ignored two warning shots," he said, adding that the suspect died en route to hospital.
Quoting Keken's police statement, Dewa said the gang had stolen dozens of motorcycles in Ciputat, Pamulang, Pondok Aren, Serpong and Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta.
"The gang usually waited for their victims in quiet streets and stopped them by pointing a gun at them before taking the motorcycles," he said. -- JP
