Two former top Bank Indonesia (BI) officials, Oey Hoey Tiong and Rusli Simanjuntak, are to read their defense statement against allegations in the embezzlement of Rp 100 billion (US$9.3 million)
Prosecutors of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) have demanded that the Corruption Court jail the two defendants for six years and fine them Rp 250 million each.
Oey, a former head of BI's legal bureau, and Rusli, a former head of BI's communications department, are being charged with illegally disbursing Rp 100 billion from BI's Indonesian Banking Development Foundation (YPPI) in 2003.
BI board of governors allegedly intended to use the money to cover legal expenses for five former BI officials, who were implicated in BI liquidity support (BLBI) corruption, and to bribe the then members of Commission IX, which oversaw banking and financial affairs. (dre)
