The National Police announced Thursday that it had arrested within four days a total of 1,024 people for alleged involvement in thuggery.
Head of crime detectives unit Susno Duaji told reporters that the arrests were part of a newly launched program, which aimed to tackle rising street crimes, particularly in six provinces: North Sumatra, Jakarta, Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java.
The operation is projected to run through early December.
"We have released 845 of them because of lack of proof and keep 172 in detention for further investigation," Susno said while added along with the arrests, police officers had confiscated four firearms, 10 sharp weapons and drugs.
Of all the five regions, Jakarta saw the most arrests, Susno said without giving more details. (anb)
