Rabid dogs kill two

KUPANG, E. NUSA TENGGARA: A man and his grandson, residents of Satar Nawang village, Sambi Rampas district, East Manggarai regency, have died after being bitten by rabid dogs.

Acting head of the East Manggarai Health Agency, Philipus Mantur, said Monday that the two victims died as they did not receive an anti-rabies vaccine when they were treated at a local clinic.

The grandfather, Nikolaus Nggong, 60, died at his home, while his grandson, Waldi Yoram, 10, died at Ruteng general hospital.

Last week, another rabies victim, Eston Lalu Djone, 8, died after having several days of treatment.

The local health agency has recorded 8,317 rabies cases in the last 10 years, 135 of them fatal. Five of those fatalities were recorded this year.

Thus far, Ngada regency tops the list with 60 fatalities, followed by East Flores with 28, Manggarai with 21, Sikka with 17, Ende with 9, and Lembata with 2. --JP
