DENPASAR: An art exhibition featuring the works of Indonesian and Japanese artists will kick off on Friday at Tonyraka Art Gallery in Ubud, Gianyar, as part of celebrations to mark the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of relations between Indonesia and Japan.
The three-day exhibition, "Nippon Artfest", will present 170 paintings and 100 ceramic works made by 150 Japanese and 35 Indonesian artists. Among them are the works of Ritsuko Kurokawa and Seikoh Taira of Japan and Indonesia's F.X. Harsono, Tisna Sanjaya and Mangu Putra.
"I am sure this event will draw many visitors. An exhibition with hundreds of Japanese works is rare here," Arif Bagus Prasetyo, Tonyraka's curator, said on Wednesday.
He said the event would be a bridge for Indonesian artists, particularly the Balinese, to plan a similar exhibition in Japan. "Our artists can give a better introduction of their works through a similar exhibition in Japan," he said.
The fact that Japan makes up the largest number of tourists to Indonesia would be an advantage to public acceptance, he added.
Works in the event will include Japanese and western painting styles, calligraphic art, graphic art, flower design art and photography.
Visitors can also see Mashikoyaki, a traditional Japanese ceramic art, which will be specially presented in the form of table set tools decorated with Japanese verses. -- JP
