OGYAKARTA: German judge Siegfried Bross received a honorary doctorate, or honoris cause degree, from the Indonesian Islamic University on Thursday.
Bross, who serves on the German Constitutional Court, presented a scientific speech titled Hak Azasi Manusia dalam Perspektif Konstitusi (Human Rights in Accordance with the Constitution) before being conferred the degree.
In his speech, Bross said it was very important that human and basic rights be enshrined in the Constitution. The inclusion is the manifestation of the perspective of the state and constitution drafters.
"But we have to be aware as many regulations on basic and human rights in the Constitution are not special things in the modern legal state," he said.
Bross is the first recipient of a honoris causa doctorate degree conferred by UII.
He was selected based on a recommendation made by Constitutional Court chief Mahfud MD, judge Jimly Ashiddiqie and former judge Harjono. -- JP
