ENPASAR: Denpasar Police have only seven walk-through metal detectors available to churches celebrating mass during Christmas and New Year, far from enough to supply the 72 Christian and Catholic churches in Denpasar, an official said on Friday.
"We are so sorry we cannot equip all churches with metal detectors because we only have seven. We have to give priority to big churches like the Cathedral and the Lembah Pujian church," head of the operation division, Sr. Comr. I Made Pastika, said.
The metal detectors, however, are sufficient for the 10 day operation codenamed "The Great Candle", which will run between Dec. 24, 2008, to Jan. 2, 2009.
Representatives from more than 30 churches' met with sub-district police chiefs on Denpasar on Friday to discuss security during the operation.
The Denpasar Police will deploy 512 officers on Dec. 24 and 583 officers on Dec. 25 to guard the island's churches. On New Year's Eve, 949 officers will be deployed. -- JP
