undreds of on-demand drivers staged a mass protest on Tuesday in Jakarta, demanding higher pay and stronger legal protections for gig workers.

The police estimated that around 1,000 drivers from various on-demand delivery and transportation companies had gathered since 10 a.m. in the vicinity of National Monument (Monas) Square in Central Jakarta, with the protest concentrated in front of the Transportation Ministry to the east.

The group of protesters then moved in front of the House of Representatives at around 1 p.m., when police were ready to divert traffic to Jl. Gatot Soebroto.

Igun Wicaksono, head of the Two-Wheeler Action Movement (Garda), stated in a press release on Monday that around 25,000 ojol (on-demand drivers) from Greater Jakarta as well as Java and Sumatra were expected to join Tuesday’s protest.

He said participating drivers would go on strike for 24 hours, refusing to take orders by turning off the apps of their affiliated on-demand delivery and transportation companies.

“Therefore, we suggest customers in Jakarta and nearly all regions across Indonesia to temporarily refrain from ordering online driver services to avoid unintended consequences,” Igun stated.

The mass protest, he said, reflected drivers’ mounting disappointment over years of neglect by the government and on-demand services companies for unfair practices, noting that their situation had remained unchanged despite prior protests.
