AirAsia seeks to offer more international flights to and from Indonesia.
According to Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia parent company Capital A Berhad, the carrier plans to expand its network with routes connecting northern Asia, Australia and the Middle East with airports in Indonesia.
Speaking at a virtual media briefing on Friday, Fernandes said the airline was capable of opening more international routes by utilizing its brand and network.
He mentioned the potential for AirAsia to expand to popular hubs in Indonesia, including Belitung, Lombok, Bali, Pontianak and Balikpapan.
Currently, AirAsia offers flights to Jakarta, Bali, Medan and Surabaya.
"We are very glad with [the development of the route to] Labuan Bajo. Belitung will soon follow and Lombok is something that we have long believed in. So yes, this is very exciting for Indonesia," Fernandes said, as quoted by news agency Antara.
He described Indonesia as holding vast opportunities and growth potential for the airline to build more routes and increase flight frequency, given the archipelago’s large market.
