lectric vehicle adoption has picked up speed in Indonesia, but charging has become a daily struggle, with a lack of fast chargers, poor user habits and frustrating queues sparking spats at stations.

Arwani Hidayat, chairman of the Indonesian Electric Vehicle Community (Koleksi), said the auto club’s members had noticed that charging stations they frequently visit are now overcrowded, with long waits becoming the norm at once-quiet locations.

“There are plenty of charging stations, but the reality is, most people only want fast chargers. Nobody wants to wait for a 30-kilowatt (kW) or below charger; they take too long,” Arwani told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Charging speed largely depends on the power output of the port, with most chargers in shopping malls, office buildings and public charging stations offering between 7 kW and 30 kW, enough to charge a battery to 80 percent in two to seven hours.

Fast chargers, available at upscale malls and larger public charging stations, though still limited in number, have between 50 kW and 200 kW capacities, cutting charging time to just 30 to 60 minutes.

Drivers of ride-hailing services are among the most frequent visitors to charging stations, Arwani observed, as they typically lack access to private parking or home chargers, unlike taxi operators.
