T Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is striving to evacuate seven workers trapped underground after a landslide struck the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) mine in Mimika, Central Papua, late on Monday.
The company said the workers’ locations had been identified and that they were believed to be safe.
“Crews are working to clear access routes for a safe and swift evacuation. At the same time, efforts are being made to provide supplies to the affected workers. All other workers have been confirmed safe,” PTFI vice president of corporate communications Katri Krisnati told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Sept. 8, when a large volume of wet material flowed into part of the underground mine, cutting off evacuation routes.
“Mining operations have been temporarily suspended to prioritize clearing access routes and ensuring the safe evacuation of the seven contractor workers,” said Katri.
