eputy House of Representatives Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad has called on the Indonesian subsidiary of France-based tire manufacturer Michelin, PT Multistrada Arah Sarana, to suspend layoffs.
“We have requested that, starting today, the layoff process be discontinued,” Dasco said after conducting an unannounced inspection on Monday at the factory in Cikarang, West Java, as quoted by Kompas.
Dasco said his surprise visit had been prompted by reports of mass layoffs.
“We came to communicate and provide assistance to the company. However, the management was not present when we arrived, since we did not inform them in advance. So, we spoke with the company’s representative instead,” he explained.
In addition to urging the company to stop the layoffs, Dasco emphasized that Multistrada had to honor its collective labor agreement and comply with prevailing labor regulations.
“If negotiations have gone through the proper stages under the collective labor agreement and layoffs become unavoidable, then the process must still adhere to labor laws,” he said.
The visit came as the government is finalizing its annual regulation on the upcoming year’s minimum wage adjustment, which is expected to be issued on Nov. 21.
