Pertamina has confirmed that its refineries are ready to process Russian crude, as the government eyes direct imports.

There are no technical barriers based on the state-owned oil and gas company’s existing infrastructure, according to Pertamina Patra Niaga corporate secretary Roberth Dumatubun.

“Regarding crude oil from Russia, Pertamina’s refinery unit is capable of processing it into refined products,” Roberth told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday, explaining that Pertamina could promptly comply with any government directive to begin imports from Russia.

“Pertamina will certainly support and play a role in providing domestic energy, and in its distribution, from processing to production,” Roberth said.

The statement follows recent talks in which Jakarta signaled its intention to expand cooperation with Moscow in various fields, including domestic crude oil storage, long-term crude and LPG supplies, nuclear energy exploration and mineral industry partnerships.

The push for additional energy supplies comes as purchases from the Middle East, where Indonesia used to source up to 25 percent of its crude oil imports, are hampered by the disruption of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz following the United States-Israeli attacks on Iran.
