The People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) is inviting losing candidates in the 2024 presidential election to the ceremony to show Indonesia as "a united and harmonious nation", MPR Speaker and Gerindra Party secretary-general Ahmad Muzani has said.
he People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) plans to invite losing presidential candidates to the inauguration of president-elect Prabowo Subianto and vice president-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka on Oct. 20.
The pair will be sworn in at a ceremony starting at 10 a.m. at the Senayan legislative complex in Jakarta. The event will mark the official transition of government from outgoing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who has been in power for a decade, to his successor.
“We will also invite the candidate pairs of Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD,” MPR Speaker Ahmad Muzani said in a statement on Wednesday, referring to the rivals to the Prabowo-Gibran ticket in February’s presidential election.
But Muzani could not confirm whether Anies, Muhaimin, Ganjar or Mahfud would attend the ceremony, as the assembly’s leaders had only recently approved the plan. The MPR would send the invitations to them soon, he added.
The two presidential candidate pairs ran and lost against Prabowo and Gibran, with observers saying their victory was thanks to Jokowi’s tacit support.
“Let’s show at the inauguration that Indonesia is a united and harmonious nation that upholds the dignity of democracy, even though there are differences in choices during the election,” said Muzani, who is also the secretary-general of Prabowo’s Gerindra Party.
