T

he government has announced that the first day of the month of Dzulhijjah in the Hijriah Islamic calendar falls on Wednesday, meaning the Idul Adha (Day of Sacrifice) holiday falls on June 6.

Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar announced the decision following an isbat (moonsighting confirmation) hearing at the ministry’s office in Jakarta on Tuesday evening.

“We initially received reports from all parts of the country that no one had seen the hilal [crescent moon]. But at the very last second, we heard that someone saw it in Aceh,” Nasaruddin said during a televised press briefing after the hearing on Tuesday.

“Therefore, we conclude that the first day of Dzulhijjah falls on May 28, while the 10th day of the month, which marks the Idul Adha holiday, will fall on June 6,” the minister continued.

The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, so a new day begins in the evening.

Syarifudin, an official with the ministry’s Jakarta regional office, earlier said that his team did not see the hilal due to the thick cloud. But he calculated that the moon had reached the height of 2 degrees over the horizon, he said as quoted by Kompas.com.
