ivic groups have condemned online intimidation against Neni Nur Hayati, director of election watchdog Democracy and Election Empowerment Partnership (DEEP) Indonesia, which often criticizes the West Java administration and other elected officials through social media.

On July 14, West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi uploaded a video on his official Instagram account in which he clarified that his administration did not allocate any portion of the regional budget for social media “buzzers”. He also invited every party to check the West Java budget allocation with the regional secretary and report if there had been any money disbursed for online “buzzers”.

Accompanying the video, he wrote a caption: “Send my regards to the mbak [woman] in hijab”.

On July 15, five Instagram accounts managed by the West Java administration reposted Dedi’s video while adding a screenshot of a video previously uploaded by Neni to her TikTok account @neninurhayati36 in May. The Instagram accounts were @diskominfojabar, @humas_jabar, @jabarprovgoid, @sapawarga_jabar and @jabarsaberhoaks.

In her TikTok, Neni, who often appears wearing a hijab, criticized the usage of social media “buzzers” by state officials and official institutions without specifically naming any individuals or bodies allegedly using the service.

She said that she also posted other videos criticizing Dedi, but Neni also slammed other officials through her social media accounts, including President Prabowo Subianto.
