rigen Conservation Breeding Ark in Pasuruan, East Java, a conservation unit of Taman Safari Indonesia, has achieved its first successful breeding of the critically endangered Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica), marking a significant step forward in efforts to conserve one of the world’s most trafficked mammals.
Jochen Menner, curator of the conservation center, said the pangolin cub was born on Feb. 16 after a gestation period of around seven months. The cub was born to two pangolins rescued from the wild by the East Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), which later entrusted the animals to the Prigen Conservation Breeding Ark to support offsite conservation efforts.
“The birth of the pangolin cub marks an important milestone in our conservation work and offers new hope for protecting this species from extinction,” Menner said.
He said caring for pangolins in captivity presented significant challenges due to the species’ highly specific biological and behavioral needs. However, through the development of specialized care facilities and the dedication of experienced keepers, pangolins at the Prigen Conservation Breeding Ark have been successfully maintained and bred without major difficulties.

Menner added that the achievement highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies and conservation institutions in strengthening wildlife rescue and protection efforts.
“Prigen Conservation Breeding Ark remains committed to supporting government efforts to conserve endangered species through the development of a sustainable offsite breeding program,” he said.
