T

he North Sumatra Police have arrested a suspect allegedly connected to an international drug syndicate over an attempt to smuggle 29 kilograms of methamphetamine from Thailand to Aceh.

The suspect, a resident of East Aceh regency identified only by the initial M, was apprehended on March 8 on the Banda Aceh-Medan highway.

Sr. Comr. Andy Arisandi, director of the North Sumatra Police's narcotics investigations unit, said M was believed to be a courier who had been tasked with also distributing the drugs to several regions in the country.

“Our investigation indicates that M obtained the methamphetamine from an Indonesian national based in Thailand, identified as R. We are currently working to locate and apprehend R,” Andy said on Monday.

He added that a third individual identified as I who was currently serving a sentence in an Aceh prison was assisting in the Thailand-Indonesia drug smuggling operation.

The illicit operation came to light after the police received intelligence on March 7 about a large narcotics shipment headed from Thailand to Aceh, Andy said.
