he government will soon introduce a policy allowing civil servants to work from home one day a week as part of efforts to reduce national fuel consumption amid rising global oil prices caused by the ongoing war in the Middle East.

While state officials dismissed speculations over national fuel shortages, the government has been mulling introducing a four-day workweek for civil servants and encouraging private companies to follow suit, suggesting that it could cut fuel consumption by around 20 percent.

Coordinating Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the policy would be announced before the end of March, following a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace on Friday.

“[The WFH arrangement] will be finalized this month,” Airlangga told reporters after the meeting, noting that the government still has several days before the end of the month to make the announcement.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa confirmed after Friday’s meeting that the one-day per week of remote work would soon be announced by Airlangga, adding that the implementation mechanism had already been reported to the President, who is closely monitoring the plan.

Purbaya said the government has yet to determine which day of the week would be designated for remote work, adding that ministers were still formulating the best arrangement to minimize disruption to productivity and maximize fuel savings.
