aster celebrations across Indonesia went relatively well in a solemn and joyous atmosphere on Monday, thanks to close cooperation between churches and local authorities.
Thousands of worshippers flocked to several churches in Batam city, Riau Islands, since early in the morning to commemorate Jesus rising from the dead
The celebration started with a torch parade prayer at 3 a.m. in Immanuel Protestant Church in Western Indonesia (GPIB) in Seraya village, Batu Ampar district.
Church elder Moza boru Pandiangan said churchgoers flocked to the early morning prayer because of its sacred atmosphere.
“There was a torch parade ritual at 3 a.m. attended by so many congregants. After that we continued by having a morning prayer at 4 a.m.,” she said.
Moza added that Immanuel GPIB church divided the prayer schedules into several sessions to accommodate thousands of worshippers, including an evening prayer session at 7 p.m.
She said GPIB, a Calvinist church, had a hierarchy known as presbyter, consisting of penatua (church elders), diaken (deacons) and priests.
