man has been injured in an apparent acid attack on Sunday in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent months that have led to growing calls for more stringent oversight in regulating hazardous chemicals.
The incident occurred at around 5:30 p.m. as the man, who has not been named, was riding an electric scooter, according to CCTV footage and accompanying information circulating widely on social media.
The video clip shows him being followed by two men on a motorcycle. After drawing alongside and engaging in a brief verbal altercation, one of the two takes a bottle and splashes the man with liquid believed to be acid before the pair flees the scene.
According to the accompanying description, the man stopped his vehicle following the attack and bystanders subsequently helped him get to a hospital.
Adj. Comr. Parman Gultom, head of criminal investigations at the Cengkareng Police, said one of the suspected assailants had been arrested, but declined to provide any other details, including the identities of those involved and a possible motive for the attack.
“We are continuing to pursue the other suspect linked to the case. Investigators have processed the crime scene and questioned several witnesses,” Parman said on Monday, as quoted by CNN Indonesia.
The alleged acid attack occurred exactly seven days after two senior high school students were injured in a similar incident on April 20 in Bogor, West Java.
