wo Singaporean tourists remain missing after Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted on Friday morning, unleashing a towering ash plume that rose 10 kilometers into the sky.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) said the eruption occurred at 7:41 a.m. local time. Observers from the agency reported a dense eruption column ranging in color from white and grey to black, moving northward from the crater.

The eruption was accompanied by rumbling sounds of varying intensity, while seismic monitoring recorded volcanic tremors with a maximum amplitude of 34 millimeters that lasted approximately 16 minutes and 7 seconds.

Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said 20 hikers were on the volcano when the eruption occurred, including nine Singaporeans.

“As of now, 14 hikers have been evacuated safely, comprised of seven Singaporeans and seven Indonesians,” he said in a statement on Friday.

Six hikers are still believed to be on the mountain. Among them are two Singaporeans who remain unaccounted for: a 30-year-old man identified by the initials HWQT and a 27-year-old man identified as SMBAH.
