T

he Riau Islands provincial administration is seeking to reorganize the migrant worker ecosystem, focusing on strengthening the upstream sector through vocational education to produce skilled workers and prevent illegal placements.

The effort is to be carried out in cooperation with the Migrant Workers Protection (P2MI) Ministry and was officiated by the signing of a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed in Tanjung Pinang on Monday.

Migrant Workers Protection Minister Mukhtarudin said the cooperation was a manifestation from the government’s new policy direction to prioritize the placement of formal workers who have competence certificates.

“As directed by the President, our future focus is preparing the placement of skilled migrant workers,” he said, as quoted by a press release issued by the provincial administration.

“The synergy with vocational higher learning institutions in Batam is crucial to develop this ecosystem from the upstream.”
