Lone woman's 'drug raid' reveals lax enforcement in N. Sumatra

A woman has gone viral on social media for her video documentation of an alleged drug den and meth factory in North Labuhanbatu regency, North Sumatra, which has prompted a leading member of the provincial legislature to demand that the local police step up their game against drug dealers and traffickers.

A

recent viral video taken by a lone woman who “raided” a drug den in North Labuhanbatu regency, North Sumatra, pointed to lax law enforcement in eradicating narcotics in the province.

Majda El Muhtaj, a lecturer at Medan State University, said the woman’s brave and risky action should be appreciated. He added that it portrayed the courage of a member of the public that stemmed from growing social frustration over weak law enforcement in combating the illegal drug trade.

“The brave action of one woman who raided a drug den was a form of public resistance and anger against crimes as well as how the state handles it,” Majda told The Jakarta Post on Saturday, adding that the incident was a sign that police were unable to eradicate drug trafficking in North Sumatra.

He questioned the performance of the local police, as they did not seem to know about the drug den and acted only after the woman had published the video she had taken of the operation, and called for a comprehensive performance review, especially of the narcotics investigation unit (Resnarkoba).

“Sectoral ego in police performance often [results] in a form of discoordination, especially if it is not supported by strong regional police leadership,” he said.
