T

he Board of Commissioners of state lender PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, or BRI, appointed Asmawi Syam as the acting president director of the company.

Syam replaced Sofyan Basir, who is now the president director of the State Electricity Company (PLN), BRI financial director Achmad Baiquni said on Monday.

'€œOn Friday, the board of commissioners appointed Pak Asmawi Syam as the acting president director until the definitive appointment for the post is held at the shareholders general meeting in March,'€ Baiquni said as quoted by Antara news agency.

According to him, the post of the acting president director will not affect BRI'€™s performance, which is currently listed as the most profitable bank in the country.

Syam'€™s authority is similar to that of the managing director, Baiquni explained. Syam is now 58 years old and has been one of the directors of BRI since September 2007.

Before being appointed the acting president director, Syam was BRI'€™s director of institutional business. He has held various managerial positions in the bank, including heading the general business division and the consumer banking division.

In 1979, Syam obtained his Master'€™s degree in management from the University of Padjadjaran in Bandung, West Java. He has taken various training and educational courses in the field of international banking. (***)
