Prabowo is in Kuala Lumpur to attend the first ASEAN summit of his presidency, during which he is also expected to attend the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.
resident Prabowo Subianto arrived on Sunday evening in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to attend the 46th ASEAN Summit and related high-level meetings.
The two-day summit, which opens on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, is expected to see Southeast Asian leaders discuss various global issues, including the Myanmar civil war, territorial disputes in the South China Sea and the effect of United States tariffs on the region’s economy.
This is the first ASEAN summit for Prabowo since he took office last October. The President is expected to also attend the 16th Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit and the 16th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Summit.
“The meetings are expected to serve as a key occasion to strengthen ASEAN’s centrality in the face of global dynamics,” Yusuf Permana, protocol and press deputy at the Presidential Secretariat, said in a statement on Sunday.
ASEAN leaders have pledged to refrain from a retaliatory policy stance in response to the 10-49 percent sweeping tariffs that US President Donald Trump imposed on Southeast Asian goods on April 2.

Following his announcement of a 90-day tariff pause in mid-May, member states including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam commenced trade talks with Washington, in line with the regional stance of pushing for negotiations to reduce tariffs, strengthening economic ties within ASEAN and deepening relations with existing and alternative partners.
