Indonesia takes delivery of first MPCS frigate KRI Brawijaya in Italy

Col. John David Nalasakti Sondakh was installed as the first commanding officer of the brand new KRI Brawijaya frigate during a ceremony in Italy.

he Indonesian Navy received its first multipurpose combat ship (MPCS) frigate, the KRI Brawijaya, during a ceremony at shipbuilder Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano, Italy on Wednesday.

Navy chief of staff Adm. Muhammad Ali, representing Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, led the ceremony, which also included officiating the frigate’s first commanding officer, Col. John David Nalasakti Sondakh, the Indonesian Navy said in a statement on Thursday.

The Brawijaya, with pennant number 320, will be deployed the Second Fleet Command’s Escort Unit, headquartered in Surabaya.

Sjafrie in his written address, read by Ali, said that KRI Brawijaya a held strategic role in increasing Indonesia’s maritime defense capabilities. Not only adding the number of warships in the navy fleet, but also a significant step in modernizing Indonesia’s main weapon system (alutsista).

Meanwhile, Ali said that KRI Brawijaya was part of the navy’s development priority by modernizing the alutsista and strengthening the capabilities and anti-surface warfare.

“This warship is very suitable for Indonesia because of our vast sea area,” he said, as quoted by the statement.

The warship is a frigate, which is referred to as PPA in Italian, with capabilities in patrol and maritime surveillance missions.
