Indonesia joins outrage over flotilla detainee abuse

In a joint statement on Monday, top diplomats from Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates condemned what they described as Ben-Gvir’s “deliberate public humiliation of detainees”, warning that his actions, if left unchecked, could further destabilize the region.

ndonesia has joined a group of Muslim-majority nations in denouncing Israeli’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for the treatment of Gaza-bound flotilla activists in detention last week, warning that his conduct risked further inflaming tensions in the Middle East.

More than 430 volunteers aboard 50 boats were intercepted on May 18 in international waters by Israeli forces seeking to stop the flotilla from delivering aid to Gaza. The convoy, which included participants from 40 countries, was held in custody during the latest attempt to break Israel’s blockade of the Palestinian territory.

Following their release on May 21, convoy participants alleged severe mistreatment during detention, including humiliation, beatings and sexual assault by Israeli authorities, with some requiring hospitalization. Nine Indonesian delegates were among those reporting abuse, several of whom described enduring heavy beatings.

Australian activist and documentary filmmaker Juliet Lamont told Reuters she was dragged, sexually assaulted and beaten while in custody.

“That was just the beginning of four days of absolute hell. I've looked into the eyes of the most soulless people in the universe, and nothing came back. These people need to be stopped,” Lamont said.
