s part of ongoing efforts to increase public awareness of environmental responsibility, particularly in household waste management, PT Daya Intiguna Yasa (“MDIY” or “MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia”) is expanding its Recycle Dropbox program to 52 stores across Greater Jakarta, Serang and Bandung.
Launched in 2024 across 10 pilot stores, the Recycle Dropbox initiative is part of the company’s sustainability commitment, “MR.D.I.Y. Untuk Indonesia,” which focuses on empowering communities and protecting the environment. Supporting this wider rollout, MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia has officially partnered with Rekosistem, a waste management technology company specializing in integrated recycling solutions.
Through the program, customers are encouraged to actively participate in sorting and managing daily household waste by depositing it in dedicated dropboxes at MR.D.I.Y. stores. Waste collection from each location is monitored through Rekosistem’s digital dashboard, which provides real-time updates on collected quantities and waste categories, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the process.
This collaboration marks an important step in the partnership between the business and technology sectors in addressing waste-management challenges in Indonesia, through data- and technology-based solutions (an online dashboard) that support transparent and efficient waste management, creating real impact in reducing waste buildup and carbon emissions. (Courtesy of MR.D.I.Y.)MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia CEO Rika Juniaty Tanzil, who also oversees the company’s sustainability agenda, stated: “With the expansion of the Recycle Dropbox program, we want to provide a simple and accessible way for customers to make real and positive contributions to the environment.”
She continued, “Through education and waste sorting facilities built into the customer journey across our stores, we hope to encourage positive daily habits and support long-term environmental awareness. With more than 1,100 stores across Indonesia, MR.D.I.Y. remains committed to supporting the national movement ‘Towards a Waste-Free Indonesia by 2029.’”
Rekosistem Co-Founder and COO, Joshua Valentino, shared similar optimism. “This collaboration marks an important step in leveraging technology and business partnerships to address Indonesia’s waste management challenges.”
He added, “From collecting thousands of kilograms of waste during the initial rollout, we’ve seen firsthand how cross-sector collaboration can reduce waste accumulation and cut carbon emissions. Rekosistem is committed to enabling more transparent and efficient waste processing through data and technology.”
Since its launch in March 2024, the Recycle Dropbox program has shown meaningful progress. Between March 2024 and July 2025, the 10 pilot locations collected more than 1,025 kg of waste through 567 individual drop-off activities. Of the total volume, 79.4 percent was inorganic waste, consisting primarily of plastic (40.63 percent), paper (25.59 percent), cardboard (7.52 percent) and metal (2.74 percent), with the remainder consisting of glass, multi-layer packaging and residual materials.
This initiative has achieved a recovery rate of 79.4 percent, significantly exceeding Indonesia’s current national average waste processing rate of approximately 22 percent. In addition, the recycled materials helped prevent an estimated 841.78 kilograms of CO₂ equivalent emissions, demonstrating tangible climate benefits.
This initiative is part of MR.D.I.Y.’s broader sustainability commitment for Indonesia, focusing on community empowerment and environmental conservation, supported by the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) to increase public awareness and expand the impact of the movement toward a waste-free Indonesia 2029.(Courtesy of MR.D.I.Y.)Based on 2024 data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment, the country generates approximately 37.3 million tonnes of waste annually, with only 32.2 percent, or about 12 million tonnes, properly managed. This reflects a substantial opportunity to accelerate waste processing through collaboration among government, private sector and communities.
“We hope that this initiative with Rekosistem will contribute meaningfully to improving Indonesia’s waste management rate,” Rika added.
The program’s expansion has also received support from the government. “We appreciate the initiative by MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia and Rekosistem, which aligns with national policies for sustainable waste management. Active private sector participation is essential to increasing public awareness and accelerating progress toward a ‘Waste-Free Indonesia by 2029,’” said Agus Rusly, Director of Waste Reduction and Circular Economy Development, Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH).
The expanded rollout also includes a redesigned dropbox featuring clearer visuals and educational prompts to encourage customer participation.
“This initiative reflects MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia’s commitment not only as a growing retail business, but also as one that upholds social and environmental responsibility,” Rika concluded.
